The Dungeons & Dragons Fantasy Roleplaying Game Starter Set, more commonly known as the Red Box, is a boxed set in the 4th edition Essentials line of products, released in September 2010. The Red Box is designed for new players, and features the same art style and cover illustration as the 1983 revision of the Dungeons & Dragons Basic Set, which was also known as the Red Box.
The Red Box was released on September 7, 2010. On September 11, 2010, Wizards of the Coast held a Red Box game day to commemorate the Starter Set's release.
The Red Box contains two books. One is a Player's Book that presents character creation and game rules as a solo adventure in the Choose Your Own Adventure or branching-path gamebook style. The other is a Dungeon Master's Book containing a group adventure continuing where the solo quest left off. The Red Box also contains four character sheets, maps, tokens, dice, and power and item cards.
Pregenerated character cards:
- Ander, halfling rogue (thief)
- Brannus, human fighter (slayer)
- Harbek, dwarf fighter (slayer)
- Korzon, human cleric (warpriest)
- Lucan, elf wizard (mage)
- Thia, elf rogue (thief)
